I am excited to participate in Fall Writing Frenzy, hosted by created by agent Kaitlyn Sanchez and writer Lydia Lukidis.
The goal is to write a story or poem in under 200 words based on one of the photos posted on the site. I chose photo #8–posted here. Let me know what you think!

Skeleton Crew
by Rochelle Melander
“Don’t worry, kid.” says Old Skelly. “Better a skeleton in the crowd than a skeleton in the closet.”
I shake, rattle, and rasp. It’s my first haunting.
Old Skelly whispers, “Watch out for zombies.”
“Say what?”
But he clatters away, leaving me with the skeleton crew.
“You can do it,” says Click.
We rush to town.
Rustle, rattle, pop, plunk.
“I’ve got a bone to pick with you,” says Clack. “You’re loud.”
“Don’t warn the little goblins,” says Click. “Scare them.”
Tip, toe, tip, toe, rattle, pop!
I try, but I rattle like a rattlesnake.
I’m not used to bare bones!
We pose in lawns.
I twist my hand, and a tiny superhero howls: “That skeleton moved!”
“Don’t be silly!” says his mama.
Tip, toe, tip, toe, rattle, pop.
Grab a bucket.
“Trick or treat!”
“Papa! I can see through them!”
“You’re imagining things!”
Tip, toe, tip toe.
We follow a group of teens.
Tip, toe, tip, toe.
We’ll scare them good.
Tip, toe, tip, toe.
They turn around.
They’re not kids!
They’re zombies!
Run!
Clatter, clunk, thump, thunk, plop.
We run smack dab into a big dog.
“Bones!” he drools.
Oh snap.
